EYFS Explained

Here you can find out more details about EYFS and how important it is for your childs development.

Early Years Foundation Stage (birth to five years old)

Schools and early years providers have to follow a structure of learning, development and care for children from birth to five years old. This is called the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and it enables your child to learn through a range of activities.

What does the Early Years Foundation Stage do?

The EYFS ensures:

  • children learn through play
  • providers work closely with parents
  • you are kept up to date on your child’s progress
  • the welfare, learning and all-round development of children with different backgrounds and levels of ability, including those with special educational needs and disabilities

Learning Journals

Here at Sharon Palmer Childminding all principles of the EYFS are adhered to.  To allow parents to keep up to date with their child's progress, I provide an individual Learning Journal which indicates the child's Learning & Development. The journal features ongoing assessments and their outcomes and a Progress Check between the age of 2-3 years old.  This is put together with photographs and pieces of work that your child has produced.  The Learning Journal is laminated so that it can be shared with your child and cherished for years to come.  The Journal belongs to your child and can be shared with other settings (with your permission) such as your Health Visitor, Pre-School and eventually 'Big School.'  I value any input and feedback from parents on their child's progress too.  I respect that parents are the experts of their own children and together we can ensure your child has his or her best start in life. This will ensure good stability for growing into adult life.

Learning & Development Requirements

There are 7 areas of learning and development that must shape educational programmes in Early Years Settings.

Three Prime Areas

  • Communication & Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional

Providers must also support children in four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied.

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive arts and design

Many activities provided at Sharon Palmer Childminding ensure that all areas of learning are focused on and primarily ensuring that all children have fun and learn through play with a hope that the child will come home and tell you all about it!
